History Highlights

1934 – A lengthy manhunt comes to an end in an Ohio cornfield as FBI agents gun down Public Enemy No. 1 — Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd. Floyd was sought in connection with a slew of bank robberies and the 1933 Kansas City Massacre in which three police officers and an FBI agent were killed.

1962 – In a nationally broadcast address, President John F. Kennedy informs Americans that the Soviet Union is stockpiling offensive missiles just 90 miles off the coast of Florida, in Cuba. The U.S. imposes a naval blockade, and so begins the Cuban Missile Crisis.

1968 – Apollo 7 safely splashes down in the Atlantic Ocean after orbiting Earth 163 times.

1976 – The Food and Drug Administration bans Red Dye No. 2 after studies show it causes tumors in dogs.

1992 – Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster Red Barber (radio voice of the Reds, Dodgers and Yankees) dies at age 84.

2012 – A fall from grace for a one-time international cycling icon. Lance Armstrong is stripped of the seven Tour de France titles he won from 1999 to 2005 and banned for life from competitive cycling after being charged with systematically using illicit performance-enhancing drugs and for making his teammates dope to help him win races. 

Musical Milestones

1966 – Motown darlings, The Supremes, become the first all-female group to top the U.S. album chart, as “The Supremes A’ Go-Go” begins two weeks at No. 1. The album contains the chart-topping single “You Can’t Hurry Love” and No. 9 hit “Love Is Like an Itch in My Heart.”

1966 – The Four Tops begin their second and final week atop the pop chart with “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” which becomes a Motown classic and the band’s signature song.

1969 – In a BBC interview, Paul McCartney publicly denies rumors that he was dead. The most recent of many clues of this “death hoax” was the fact that he was the only barefoot Beatle on the cover of the newly released “Abbey Road” album. 

1977 – “You Light Up My Life,” by Debby Boone, begins the second of 10 weeks as a No. 1 single.

1988 – Phil Collins rules the singles chart with his cover of The Mindbenders’ “A Groovy Kind Of Love,” his sixth No. 1 single.

1994 – “I’ll Make Love to You,” by Boyz II Men, is midway through a 14-week domination of the pop chart.

2005 – “Gold Digger,” by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, is in the midst of a 10-week reign over the Billboard Hot 100. The track contains samples of Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman.”
