1945 – Italy’s deposed former dictator, Benito Mussolini (a.k.a. “Il Duce”), and his mistress, Clara Petacci, are shot by Italian partisans who had captured the couple as they attempted to flee to Switzerland.

1967 – Boxing champion Muhammad Ali refuses induction into the U.S. Army to serve in the Vietnam War. He is immediately stripped of his world heavyweight title. Ali, a Muslim, cites religious reasons for his decision to forgo military service.

1969 – Charles de Gaulle, a towering figure in post-World War II politics, resigns as the president of France.

1988 – An Aloha Airlines 737 makes an emergency landing on Maui, Hawaii after a large section of roof and fuselage tears away in flight, killing one stewardess.

2004 – Comcast, America’s largest cable operator, abandons a $54 billion hostile takeover bid for the Walt Disney Company in the face of faltering stock prices and Disney’s continued refusal to entertain the proposal.

1962 – “Good Luck Charm,” by Elvis Presley, begins its second and final week on top of the pop chart.

1965 – Barbra Streisand makes her television debut in the CBS special, “My Name is Barbra,” in conjunction with the album of the same name. The hour-long special consists of three acts and clinches five Emmy and two Tony Awards. The album captures a Best Female Vocal Performance Grammy.

1968 – The first rock musical, “Hair,” opens at New York’s Biltmore Theater, featuring the songs “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” “Good Morning Starshine” and the title track. More than 1,700 performances are given by the time it closes in the summer of 1972.

1933 – The German Reichstag (Parliament) passes the Enabling Act of 1933, which marks the start of Adolf Hitler’s transformation from chancellor to dictator by enabling him to implement laws without Reichstag consent.

1983 – Barney Clark dies 112 days after becoming the world’s first recipient of a permanent artificial heart.

1983 – In a televised speech to Americans, President Ronald Reagan calls for development of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) to protect the U.S. from a nuclear missile attack. The program is also referred to as “Star Wars.”

1803 – One of the greatest real estate deals in history is completed as France turns over more than a million square miles of the Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for a price equal to about $20 per square mile.

1963 – More than two years after construction of the Berlin Wall by East Germany to prevent citizens from fleeing its communist regime, the wall is temporarily opened for the holidays. Nearly 4,000 West Berliners are granted one-day passes to cross into East Berlin to visit relatives. The wall is sealed off again on January 5, 1964.

1968 – Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Nobel laureate John Steinbeck, best known for works like “East of Eden,” “Of Mice and Men” and “The Grapes of Wrath,” dies at the age of 66.

1776 – The Liberty Bell rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

1947 – Reports are broadcast that a “flying disc” has crash-landed in Roswell, New Mexico, however U.S. Air Force officials claim it is a weather balloon. The incident triggers conspiracy theories about a government coverup and accounts of aliens and UFOs that are still debated today.

1959 – American troops suffer their first casualties in the Vietnam War with the deaths of Maj. Dale R. Buis and Master Sgt. Chester M. Ovnand.

1960 – An emerging Cold War détente between the United States and Soviet Union suffers a setback when the Soviets charge U.S. Air Force and CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers with espionage. The move comes two months after the Soviets shoot Powers down while flying a secret spy mission.

1994 – Kim Il-Sung, the communist dictator of North Korea since 1948, dies of a heart attack at the age of 82. Hoping to reunify Korea by force, Kim launched an invasion of South Korea in 1950, igniting the Korean War, which ended in a stalemate in 1953.

1958 – The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awards the first official Gold album (for achieving sales of $1 million). It goes to the cast album for the stage production of “Oklahoma!” featuring Gordon MacRae.
