History Highlights

1789 – Congress passes and President George Washington signs the Judiciary Act of 1789 into law, establishing the U.S. Supreme Court as a tribunal comprised of six justices who were to serve until they voluntarily step down, retire or die.

1941 – The Japanese consul in Hawaii is instructed to divide Pearl Harbor into five zones, calculate the number of battleships in each zone and report the findings back to Japan. Unbeknownst to U.S. military officials, this information is used to lay the groundwork for Japan’s devastating December 7, 1941 attack.

1957 – President Dwight Eisenhower orders federal troops to escort nine African American students, nicknamed the “Little Rock Nine,” into the previously all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1968 – One of television’s longest-running news magazines debuts on CBS. It’s “60 Minutes,” with hosts Harry Reasoner and Mike Wallace presenting documentary-style coverage of the week’s news.

1969 – The trial of the “Chicago 8” begins. The band of protesters is accused of conspiracy and inciting a riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

1977 – “The Love Boat” sets out on its maiden TV voyage on ABC, featuring a cruise ship full of celebrity passengers with tales of romance found and hearts broken.

1988 – Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson runs the 100-meter dash in 9.79 seconds to win gold at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. However, Johnson tests positive for steroids three days later and is stripped of the medal, which is instead awarded to American Carl Lewis.

1966 – “Cherish,” by The Association, begins three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1982 – Prince releases the single “1999,” a month before releasing the album of the same name. It climbs as high as No. 44 that December. Re-released in 1983, the track rises to No. 12 that July. Warner Brothers releases it again in 1985 as a 12″ single with “Little Red Corvette” as the B-side. Within two weeks, it’s a No. 2 hit. The song returns to the pop chart in December 1998, becoming Prince’s last Top 40 hit before his death in 2016.

1983 – Billy Joel rules the singles chart with “Tell Her About It,” off his “An Innocent Man” album.

1988 – Bobby McFerrin begins a two-week run on top of the singles chart with “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” the first a cappella record to be a No. 1. The accompanying music video features the late actor-comedian Robin Williams.

1991 – The pioneering grunge band Nirvana releases “Nevermind” — the album containing the hit singles “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom.” It reaches No. 1 on the album chart in January 1992 and goes on to sell around 30 million copies worldwide.

1994 – “I’ll Make Love to You,” by Boyz II Men, is in the middle of a 14-week domination of the pop chart.

2005 – “Gold Digger,” by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, is the No. 1 single.

2011 – “Moves Like Jagger,” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, begins three weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100.

1982 – Swedish-born actress and three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman dies of cancer in London on her 67th birthday.

2005 – Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near New Orleans as a Category 3 storm with winds of up to 120 miles per hour. It becomes the costliest natural disaster and among the five deadliest hurricanes to strike the United States. Katrina is blamed for some 1,800 deaths and property damage in excess of $108 billion.

1964 – “Oh, Pretty Woman,” by rock ‘n roll legend Roy Orbison, lands on the pop chart and climbs to the No. 1 spot a month later, becoming the Texas native’s second chart-topping single.

1964 – “Where Did Our Love Go,” by The Supremes, holds tight for a second straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. It is the first of five consecutive chart-topping singles for Motown’s hottest act.

1966 – Candlestick Park in San Francisco is the setting of the last Beatles concert ever. The Fab Four play before a sold-out crowd of 25,000 fans.

1970 – Edwin Starr kicks off three weeks on top of the pop chart with “War,” a Vietnam War protest song written by Motown Records hitmakers Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong.

1987 – “La Bamba,” by Los Lobos, kicks off three weeks as a No. 1 single. The track is used in the movie of the same name.

1998 – Brandy & Monica wrap up a 13-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart with “The Boy Is Mine.”

1955 – While visiting relatives in Mississippi, Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy from Chicago, is abducted, tortured and murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman four days earlier. Till’s devastated mother insisted on a public, open-casket funeral for her son to shed light on the violence inflicted on Black people in the South. The killers were acquitted, but Till’s death galvanized civil rights activists nationwide.

1963 – More than a quarter of a million people participate in the March on Washington, a peaceful civil rights rally which culminates with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivering his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

1968 – Riots erupt in the streets of Chicago during the Democratic National Convention as Vietnam War protesters clash with police.

1981 – Oscar-winning director John Huston, known for such cinematic classics as “The Maltese Falcon,” “Key Largo,” “The African Queen,” “Moulin Rouge” and “The Misfits,” dies of pneumonia at age 81.

1961 – The Marvelettes release their first single, “Please Mr. Postman,” which sells over a million copies and becomes the group’s biggest hit. It reaches the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B survey, becoming Motown’s first chart-topper.

1961 – Joe Dowell rockets to No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart with his cover of “Wooden Heart,” originally performed by Elvis Presley a year earlier in the movie “G.I. Blues.” Presley’s version reached No. 1 in the U.K.

1939 – The first Major League baseball game is televised. It’s a double-header between the Cincinnati Reds and Brooklyn Dodgers at New York’s Ebbets Field, with the teams splitting the match.

1957 – The Soviet Union declares that it has successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of being fired “into any part of the world.” The announcement sets nations around the world on edge.

1968 – As the Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago, thousands of demonstrators take to the streets to protest the Vietnam War.

1974 – Aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, dies of cancer in Hawaii at the age of 72.

1985 – The Yugo, the Yugoslavian-built compact car that Americans loved to hate, is introduced to the U.S. auto market. Sales begin to sputter in the late 1980s, and by 1992, Yugo America is out of business.

1986 – In what becomes known as the “Preppy Murder” case because of the upper-class status of both the victim and killer, the body of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin is discovered in New York’s Central Park shortly after leaving a bar with 19-year-old Robert Chambers. Chambers is arrested, charged and ultimately found guilty of Levin’s murder, and dubbed the “Preppy Killer.”

History Highlights

1923 – The iconic Hollywood sign is officially dedicated on Mount Lee, overlooking Los Angeles, as “Hollywoodland.” The last four letters are removed during a 1949 renovation. Meant to be a temporary advertisement for a new housing tract, it evolves into one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.

1930 – The first World Cup soccer competition is held in Montevideo, Uruguay, with 13 teams participating.

1960 – Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy is nominated for the presidency at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, defeating Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. The next day, Johnson is named Kennedy’s running mate by a unanimous vote of the convention.

1977 – On a sweltering summer’s evening, a massive power outage caused by a lightning strike at an electrical substation, plunges New York City into darkness for 25 hours. During the blackout, looters raid 1,600 stores, 50 vehicles are stolen from a Bronx car dealership, and more than a thousand fires are set across the five boroughs. Police arrest some 3,700 looters — the largest mass arrest in NYPD history.

1990 – The supernatural-romantic-thriller “Ghost,” starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, opens in theaters. Goldberg goes on to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, becoming only the second African-American actress to do so after Hattie McDaniel in 1939 for her performance in “Gone With The Wind.”

1959 – Paul Anka has the second No. 1 single of his career when “Lonely Boy,” from the movie “Girls Town,” hits the top of the pop chart.

1968 – “This Guy’s in Love with You,” by Herb Alpert, wraps up four weeks as a No. 1 single.

1974 – The hottest single is George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby,” one of the earliest disco tracks to get airplay on Top 40 radio.

1974 – Elton John is on top of the Billboard album chart with “Caribou,” the LP that spawns the hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

1985 – Duran Duran’s “A View to a Kill,” from the James Bond movie of the same name, kicks off two weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart. Coincidentally, the band performs the song the same day at Live Aid in Philadelphia.

1985 – Live Aid features simultaneous concerts in London and Philadelphia to raise funds for African famine relief. Organized by activist/musician Bob Geldof, the global event draws one of the largest audiences in television history — nearly two billion viewers.

1989 – Milli Vanilli release “Blame It On The Rain,” which climbs to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 that November.

1991 – Paula Abdul begins her fifth and final week on top of the pop chart with “Rush Rush.”

2002 – Nelly commandeers the Billboard Hot 100 with “Hot in Herre.”
