1862 – Paper money, known as Legal Tender Notes or United States Notes, is issued for the first time in the U.S. The denominations are $5 (Hamilton), $10 (Lincoln) and $20 (Liberty).

1876 – Alexander Graham Bell places the world’s first telephone call at his Boston laboratory. He summons his assistant, Thomas Watson, who was in the next room, by saying, “Mr. Watson, come here — I want to see you.” Bell had secured a patent for his groundbreaking communication device just three days earlier.

1959 – Some 300,000 Tibetans band together in revolt, surrounding the summer palace of the Dalai Lama in defiance of Chinese occupation forces that moved in almost 10 years earlier. The anniversary of the failed rebellion is observed by Tibetan exiles as the “Tibetan Uprising Day.”

1969 – James Earl Ray pleads guilty to assassinating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is sentenced to 99 years in Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Tennessee. Ray later retracts his guilty plea.

1993 – An anti-abortion protester shoots and kills Dr. David Gunn outside the Pensacola (Florida) Women’s Medical Services clinic, where Gunn performed abortions. Although the gunman immediately turns himself in to authorities, the murder sets off a wave of deadly anti-abortion violence across the U.S.

1956 – RCA Victor takes out a half-page ad in Billboard magazine proclaiming that Elvis Presley is “the new singing rage.”

1962 – “Hey! Baby,” by Bruce Channel, begins a three-week run at No. 1 on the singles chart.

1964 – Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel record an acoustic version of “The Sound of Silence” for their debut album, “Wednesday Morning, 3AM.” Later, without the duo’s knowledge, Columbia Records producers overdub electric guitar, bass and drums for another version of the track that becomes the chart-topping hit in January 1966.

1979 – Gloria Gaynor reaches the top of the singles chart with the disco anthem “I Will Survive.”

1984 – Madonna charts for the first time in her career with “Borderline.” The single climbs as high as No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1988 – Pop sensation Andy Gibb, the younger brother of the Bee Gees, dies of an inflammatory heart virus at the age of 30.

2003 – During a concert in London, Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines declares that the band is “ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas,” referring to President George W. Bush. The remark sparks outrage among many Americans, and some radio stations stop playing their music.

1933 – The Postal Telegraph Company, based in New York City, introduces the first singing telegram.

1962 – American spy pilot Francis Gary Powers is released by the Soviets in exchange for Soviet Colonel Rudolf Abel, a senior KGB spy who was caught in the United States five years earlier.

1967 – The 25th Amendment to the Constitution is ratified. It clarifies procedures for presidential succession along with provisions for the continuity of power in the event of a disability or illness of the president.

1981 – A fire at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino kills eight people and injures nearly 200 others. Investigators determine that the blaze was set by 23-year-old hotel employee Phillip Cline. He is convicted of eight counts of murder and sentenced to eight consecutive life terms without parole for the deaths, plus 15 years for first-degree arson.

1989 – Ron Brown is elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), becoming the first African American to lead a major American political party.

1996 – World chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer capable of evaluating 200 million moves per second. Man was ultimately victorious over machine, however, as Kasparov bested Deep Blue in the match with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize.

1898 – The Treaty of Paris is signed, ending the Spanish-American War. It effectively dissolves the Spanish empire with the United States taking over much of Spain’s overseas holdings. Puerto Rico and Guam are ceded to the U.S., the Philippines is purchased for $20 million, and Cuba becomes a U.S. protectorate.

1901 – The first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. Named after Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prize is still considered the most prestigious international honor. Notable winners throughout the years have included Marie Curie, Theodore Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, George Bernard Shaw, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others.

1907 – An American scientist wins the Nobel Peace Prize for the first time. It’s University of Chicago physics professor Albert Michelson, known for his research into the speed of light and optics.

1950 – Diplomat, scholar and activist Dr. Ralph Bunche, a key member of the United Nations for more than two decades, becomes the first African-American awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation efforts between Israel and neighboring Arab states in the late 1940s.

1999 – “The Cider House Rules,” starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron and Michael Caine, opens in movie theaters. Oscars go to Caine for Best Supporting Actor and John Irving for Best Adapted Screenplay.

1967 – Soul legend Otis Redding dies in a Wisconsin plane crash three days after recording his biggest hit, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” He is just 26 years old.

1967 – Doors frontman Jim Morrison becomes the first rock star arrested on stage during a performance. It happens in New Haven, Connecticut. Following a backstage altercation with a police officer that maced him, Morrison taunts police during his set and is taken into custody. Angry fans riot.

1977 – Debby Boone continues to light up the pop chart with “You Light Up My Life,” which begins its ninth out of 10 weeks as a No. 1 single.

1903 – The U.S. Patent Office awards Patent No. 743,801 to Mary Anderson for her “window cleaning device” for cars and other vehicles to remove snow, ice or sleet from the window. Known today as the windshield wiper, Anderson never made a penny on her invention because the patent expired before it was put into widespread use.

1951 – The introduction of area codes means callers no longer require an operator to place domestic long-distance phone calls for them. Rather, they can direct-dial anywhere across the country.

1969 – “Sesame Street” premieres on public television (PBS), introducing a generation of kids to Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog, Ernie and Bert, Cookie Monster and many other beloved characters — some puppets, some animated as well as live actors — breaking new ground by combining fun with education on TV.

1970 – The Great Wall of China opens to world tourism.

1975 – The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a workhorse freighter that carried massive loads of iron ore from mines in Minnesota to various Great Lakes ports, sinks in Lake Superior after getting caught in a powerful storm. All 29 crewmembers are killed. The tragedy is immortalized in musician Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 hit, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

1989 – Germans continue to tear down whole sections of the Berlin Wall, and souvenir hunters quickly snatch up stone and concrete chunks from the crumbling Cold War icon.

1948 – The first reality TV show premieres before most Americans even own a TV. “Candid Camera,” with host Allen Funt, filmed pranks as they played out on unsuspecting victims who often didn’t realize they were being duped until they heard the show’s tagline: “Smile! You’re on Candid Camera.”

1965 – President Lyndon Johnson signs the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Act into law, paving the way for a major expansion of federal housing programs.

1977 – After terrorizing New York City for more than a year, serial killer David Berkowitz — the self-proclaimed “Son of Sam” — is arrested.

1978 – Three teenage girls die after their 1973 Ford Pinto is rammed from behind by a van and bursts into flames on an Indiana highway. The fatal crash is one of a series of Pinto fires caused by rear-end collisions and the vehicle’s improperly designed fuel tank that eventually leads to a massive recall by Ford and at least one multi-million-dollar lawsuit.

1993 – Ruth Bader Ginsburg is sworn in as the second female U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

1963 – ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder is just 13 when “Fingertips Part 2” reaches the top of the Billboard singles chart and holds there for three weeks. He becomes the youngest musician ever with a No. 1 hit.

1974 – “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” by Roberta Flack, tops the pop chart. Later, it receives three Grammy nominations.

1976 – Elton John plays the first of 10 sold-out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The $1.25 million generated from the shows breaks a record set by The Rolling Stones in 1975.

1985 – “Shout,” by Tears For Fears, is midway through a three-week run atop the Billboard Hot 100.

1991 – “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You,” by Bryan Adams, is the No. 1 single. It appears on the “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” soundtrack.

2002 – In her third marriage, Lisa Marie Presley ties the knot with actor Nicolas Cage at a resort in Hawaii. Presley was previously married to musician Danny Keough and pop sensation Michael Jackson. Cage files for divorce four months later.

2008 – Soul singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes dies of a stroke at his home in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 65. Hayes won an Oscar for the 1971 smash “Theme From Shaft” and was the voice of Chef from the animated TV series “South Park.”

History Highlights

1850 – Vice President Millard Fillmore is sworn in as the 13th U.S. president. President Zachary Taylor had died the day before of a severe intestinal ailment. Fillmore becomes only the second man to inherit the presidency due to death.

1925 – The so-called “Monkey Trial” begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law.

1962 – Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin receives a U.S. patent for the three-point, lap-and-shoulder seatbelt he invented while head of safety at Volvo. Considered one of the most significant safety innovations of all time, the seatbelt is credited with saving millions of lives and preventing at least as many injuries in car crashes around the world. Bohlin received a gold medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science in 1995 and, in 1999, was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

1962 – NASA launches Telstar, the world’s first communications satellite, from Cape Canaveral. Two days later, the man-made orb relays the first transatlantic television signal from Maine to France.

1978 – The ABC News nightly “World News Tonight” broadcast premieres, featuring co-anchors Frank Reynolds in Washington, D.C., Max Robinson in Chicago and Peter Jennings in London.

1985 – French secret service agents plant two bombs on the hull of the Rainbow Warrior, the flagship of international conservation group Greenpeace, and sink the vessel in Auckland Harbor New Zealand. One crew member is killed in the blast, which was aimed at stopping the Rainbow Warrior from a protest mission to a French nuclear test site in the South Pacific.

1992 – The Alaska court of appeals overturns the conviction of Joseph Hazelwood, former captain of the oil tanker Exxon Valdez, citing a federal statute that gave him immunity from prosecution for the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
