1972 – A mining dam collapses, sending millions of gallons of black coal wastewater across a wide area of Logan County, West Virginia. The Buffalo Creek Disaster claims 125 lives and leaves 4,000 people homeless.

1993 – Six people are killed and more than 1,000 others are injured when a bomb, planted inside a parked van, explodes in the garage of the World Trade Center in New York City. The blast leaves a crater 150 feet wide and causes the collapse of several steel-reinforced concrete floors. Six terrorists are eventually captured, tried and convicted for the attack.

1998 – A jury finds Oprah Winfrey not guilty in a $10 million defamation lawsuit brought by Texas cattle ranchers. The plaintiffs had accused the talk show host of harming the U.S. beef industry with a 1996 broadcast about mad cow disease. Exiting the courtroom, Winfrey exclaims, “Free speech not only lives, it rocks!”

2012 – Trayvon Martin, an African-American teen, is fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman while walking home from a Sanford, Florida convenience store. The killing sparks a national outcry over race relations and self-defense gun laws, as Martin was unarmed when he was shot.

1788 – Britain’s First Fleet sails into Sydney Harbor and begins the European colonization of Australia. The fledgling colony marks this event each year as Australia Day, however in recent years Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander have objected because they see the occasion as the beginning of the deliberate destruction of their people and culture.

1905 – A 3,106-carat diamond is discovered during a routine inspection at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa. Weighing 1.33 pounds, it is the largest diamond ever found, and is named the Cullinan after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the mine.

1926 – Scottish inventor John Logie Baird gives the first public demonstration of a true television system (called a “televisor”) in London, launching a revolution in communication and entertainment.

1950 – The Republic of India is formed as the Indian constitution takes effect.

1961 – President John F. Kennedy appoints Janet Travell, 59, as his personal physician, making her the first woman in history to hold that post.

1789 – November 26 is the day that President George Washington officially proclaims as Thanksgiving Day after Congress asks him to recommend “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.” It is next proclaimed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 for the last Thursday in November. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt moves Thanksgiving to the next to last Thursday in November, but facing criticism for the move, he signs a bill in 1941 officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

1922 – British archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon become the first people to enter King Tutankhamen’s tomb in more than 3,000 years. The sealed burial chambers in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings are found intact along with a collection of several thousand priceless objects, including a gold coffin containing the mummy of the teenage king.

1956 – TV’s longest-running game show, “The Price is Right,” premieres with Bill Cullen as host and Don Pardo as announcer.

1973 – Rose Mary Woods, President Richard Nixon’s personal secretary, tells a federal court that she accidentally erased 18 minutes from a key Watergate tape.

1975 – A federal jury finds Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme guilty of the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford. Fromme receives a life sentence and manages to escape from prison in 1987. However, she was captured and returned to prison until her 2009 release.

Chambers is arrested, charged and ultimately found guilty of Levin’s murder, and dubbed the “Preppy Killer.”
